The EVO International service (http://evo.caltech.edu) changes.

Version 2.8

  • Updated ViEVO video client with better memory management
  • New VIDEO transcoder: use of H.264 with many more different layouts
  • H.323 client:
    • Use of the H.264 codec that allows many video resolutions (up to full HD) with H.323 clients
    • Compatibility with H.239 protocol. It lets you send desktop (PC) presentation from your H.323 client to all the EVO participants.
  • Version 2.6

  • new software acoustic echo cancellation
  • You can now connect/disconnect any audio devices in the meeting and click on update driver to get the new list or between meetings (new driver will be updated automatically when entering) and a message will pop-up if it is not the same as the previously selected one. It works in a same way for all OSes.
  • Koala will detect the first time you join EVO meeting and will prompt you to make a choice of audio driver. This choice will be saved and used in a future.
  • Possibility to book bi-weekly meeting
  • Possibility to copy Koala log file in user-specified place. Go to in "Koala->About" and click on "Copy Log" button and "Copy Log"
  • Changed layout in Audio Video Controls:
    • DeskShare tab was added to manage the desk share tool.
    • "Update Device list" added in Audio.
    • Version number of each tool is displayed.
  • Raised hand mechanism was updated. No more grey raised hands, which are stuck grey in the beginning of the meeting.
  • Information in the chat if remote site has echo suppression suddenly activated
  • New h.264 version of shared desktop with better compression and ability to change the quality of transmission. You can either pick up one of predefined modes or operation ("High", "Mid", "Low") or click on "User" and define Bandwidth and framerate by youself.
  • Koala shake behaviour was changed. It will not shake Koala anymore if you are not in a meeting and someone send beep in any chat. Smiley menu doesn't have blue bubble smiley to Ding anymore.
  • EVO Tools button "Reset Audio/Video Defaults" was updated in major way.
    Now it resets:
    • EVO Tools: auto transmit, audio only,
    • ViEVO: removes .properties.xml, actually the whole ViEVO plugin directory is deleted and reloaded, ViEVO window position is reset to default
    • DeskShare (removes whole plugin directory and reset DeskShare window position to default)
    • Mixer Settings: echo, auto gain, etc are reset to default
    • ViEVO and Mixer are restarted, DeskShare is shut down

Summary how to use Pulse audio (linux):

    • If you use OpenJDK then you will see the input and output drivers in the pull down menu called "Pulse Audio mixer". By selecting them, you will use the Pulse Audio mixer and both audio in/out will be working fine with multiple others audio applications. You can still select directly a particular Audio driver via the pull down menu if it is a choice (but with the limitation that we already know). So far, it was tested on Ubuntu and Fedora and it worked fine.
    • If you use Sun JVM, then you will need to select "Java sound engine" as output device. The audio received will be of good quality and you should be able to see on the Pulseaudio panel that there is an OSS Java emulation application. That means that you can listen multiple audio output in parallel (listen to EVO meeting and a flash video clip for example). For the input, there is no possible selection of pulse audio compatible driver so it is as now. Hopefully, most of the issue are on the receiving audio.
